John and Lorna Harries Memorial Run 23rd April 2023

Tony and Margaret organised a run on some roads in areas North of Carmarthen as a memorial following the sad passing of John and Lorna . John had spoken to Tony some time ago telling him that he would like to organise a run in this area and it seemed a fitting event to coincide with Drive It Day.

Over 27 cars met at our usual starting point in Whitland on a dry morning and the weather improved as the day went on. Our route took us through the minor roads and small villages to the west and north of Carmarthen. We left Whitland and travelled east to St. Clears noticing other Drive It Day groups on our way. We then headed north to Meidrim before continuing north to Trelech on quiet roads. Tony had told us that the route would include a variety of roads, some good ,some narrow, some hilly and some very potholed due to the lack of maintenance by Carms.C.C. so care was needed on some sections. Tony’s description of the route as always proved to be accurate but all cars survived the sometimes challenging sections of the route.

Leaving Trelech we drove on to Conwyl Elfed through one of the poorly maintained sections with a steep descent. We continued through Llanpumpsaint and Pontarsais before another potholed section from Llanllawddog to Brechfa. At Brechfa just over half way through the route we had a welcome toilet break and were able to stretch our legs and check our springs and shocks !

Leaving Brechfa and going through Llanfynydd on minor roads we went on to Broad Oak where the roads became wider and smoother. The remainder of the route from Broad Oak to us on the A40 in sunshine to Bancyfelin and a welcome lunch at The Fox and Hounds.

Thanks to Tony and Margaret for an enjoyable run that would have been John’s route. Thanks also for the great turnout by the Harries family in support of the Memorial Run.
